Arnie helped to popularise the professional sport in the USA in the 1950s and 1960s. He won the Masters 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964; the US Open 1960;

He was The Open Champion 1961(Royal Birkdale) and 1962. (Troon) now Royal Troon

He was also runner-up in The Open at St. Andrews 1960, a win that year would have made him holder of The Open, U.S. Open, and the Masters in the same year.

Born in Pennsylvania, the son of a green-keeper, Arnie attended Wake Forest (NC) University and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He won the US amateur title 1954, and went on to win all the world major professional trophies except the USPGA Championship. In the 1980s he enjoyed a successful career on the US Seniors Tour.
