Sir George Cathcart No. 617

James Madison (1751-1836)

Fourth President of U.S.A.

Term of Office :- March 4th. 1809 -March 3rd. 1817

First Lady :- Dorothea Payne Todd

Vice Presidents :- George Clinton, Elbridge Gerry.

James Madison was a writer, legislator, and a scholar. His presidency was less successful than his work as a legislator and law maker, for he presided during the difficult period of the war of 1812, when regionalism threatened to pull the Union  apart.

Madison continued the rule of the "Virginia Dynasty" that included Washington,

Jefferson, and Monroe, men who had come of age during the American Revolution and who would guide the new nation up until 1828.

His masonic details are not clear he was said to be a member of Hiram Lodge No.59 Westmoreland County Virginia, a lodge which only had a short existence and whose records are lost.

A letter exists from John Mercer Governor of Maryland congratulating Madison on his initiation.

There are several "Madison" lodges in the U.S.A. named after him
