Franklin Roosevelt was an unusually powerful and active president whose influence was felt the world over by the end of his time in office.

He came from a patrician background and could be domineering, but he also had the common touch. His legacy of social activism and American leadership in world affairs left a deep imprint on American history.

"In the future days which we seek to make secure, we would look forward to a world founded upon four essential freedoms.

The first is freedom of speech and expression, everywhere in the world.

The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way- everywhere in the world.

The third is freedom from want.

The fourth is freedom from fear."
