History of Freemasonry / Famous Freemasons

Through the centuries, many men of great repute and standing in the history of the world have been Freemasons. The list of these persons in itself is a good quality reference of the Masonic tradition: cultural and historic multiformity, colourful individualities and a significant role in the history of mankind.

There is a substantial interplay between Freemasonry and the activities of these people. Despite that, one should avoid simplified generalizations. By far not all events in the lives of men listed below have been connected or determined by their membership in Masonic Lodges. There is an individual quality and quantity level intrinsic of the above interplay for each of these persons. Every case is separate.

Famous Freemasons:

  • Louis Armstrong, jazz musician, the USA;
  • François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire), philosopher and writer, France;
  • Sir Winston Churchill, politician, statesman, Great Britain;
  • Rudyard Kipling, writer (member of a Lodge in India);
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, composer, Austria;
  • Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain), writer, the USA;
  • George Washington, 1st president of the USA, the USA.
