Holidays in Scotland can be quite different from those in other parts of the United Kingdom.
This is because unlike, for example England, which had the same national holidays, Scotland had holidays according to local not national tradition.
Such holidays were based on local market days which were different from place to place. Monday, 21st April is the Edinburgh Spring Bank Holiday when most Edinburgh workers will have the day off. Yet the other major city in the central belt - Glasgow will all be working!
Although this initially seems chaotic it was, as is, economically beneficial. People on holiday in Edinburgh would, and do, go shopping in Glasgow instead (and vice versa).
Please note that in Scotland Public Holidays do not coincide with national Bank Holidays.
