The Genealogie of the Sainteclaires of Rosslyn The contents of this book were compiled by Father Richard Augustine Hay (1661-c.1736), who had access to the Sinclair family papers, about 1690. His manuscripts, now in the National Library of Scotland, were edited and published, anonymously by James Maidment (1795-1879) in 1835. Maidment's work is exceedingly rare as only 120 copies were printed. His work is often cited as a source by writers who comment on a variety of subjects as diverse as: Scottish Freemasonry, the Sinclair family, Scottish history, the Knights Templar and Rosslyn Chapel. Those who have wished to consult this book have been hampered not only by its scarcity but also because Maidment reproduced Hay's Latin transcriptions without translating them. The Grand Lodge of Antient Free and Accepted Masons of Scotland determined, therefore, to produce another version in order to make it available to all those who have an interest in Scottish Freemasonry etc. In order to make it more accessible the Latin Charters and other documents have been translated into English. Brother John Wade of the University of Sheffield has done an outstanding job in rendering the Latin text into English. For anyone interested in the origins of Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, Rosslyn Chapel, the St Clair or Sinclair family, this is essential work of reference. Writers on these subjects will require, henceforth, to refer to this book.
