Lodge History
Temperance Lodge was sponsored by Gold Fields Lodge No 2478 but its Charter Master, W Bro Dr John Taylor Broun and several of the Founders came from the Irish Constitution which led to speculation as to whether John Broun could not wean enough of his brethren away from their whiskey (with an 'e') to form the lodge under his own Constitution!
The lodge has had five meeting places - 95 Jeppe Street, Scotia Hall, 8 Claim Street, III Kerk Street, moving finally, in its Golden Jubilee year, to Freemasons' Hall in Parktown.
Generally, the progress of Temperance Lodge has been very steady. However, it did experience a difficult period in recent years, but thanks to the determination of a few members, backed by Past Masters, the problems have been overcome and the lodge is back on a sound course.
The lodge's one Grand Officer, Bro George Leach (WM in 1934/5 and 1942/3) who also achieved very high rank in the Royal Arch lives on in many older memories as the most exact, and exacting, ritualist of his day. When he was Preceptor, woe betide the brother or Companion who strayed as far one word from the book!
