Lodge History

Union Lodge Banner

The founders of the Lodge included members of the four constitutions working in South Africa and the name reflects their wish to work together in the common cause of Freemasonry.

The Lodge was consecrated in the Kerk Street masonic hall, and its subsequent history has been punctuated by moves, to Park Lane in 1957, Hans Street, (Jeeppestown) in 1980, to Parktown North in 1988 and finally in 1992, back to Park Lane. Its membership has been broadly based, while including good suppo from the banking and insurance sectors. Its Charter Master, W Bro H I Cohen (from Fairview Lodge No 3010) attained Grand rank in 1955, and was also District Grand Master in the Mark. Over forty years after consecration one of the founders, W Bro Bert Suffling, remains very active in the Lodge, and has been through the chair twice.

The Lodge is proud of having been one of the first if not the first to reach its quota for the Jubilee Memorial Appeal.

In recent years Union Lodge has been through a very lean period, which involved inter alia some of the stalwarts going through the chair for a second or third time. However, since returning to Park Lane the Lodge seems to have turned the comer and the future looks hopeful.
