Major Annual Charity Grant to
G.E.M. Homes For Senior Citizens – Roosevelt Park
The village is comprised of 84 cottages and flats. The majority of the residents have to exist on Govt pensions of R1167 PM, R500 of this goes towards rental and amenities, leaving little over to survive. Using a study done by TUKS University on the proposed Eskom (and Council) electricity rates, it was concluded that residents would be unable to afford electricity within 18 months. A three pronged application for assistance was received from GEM for consideration: electricity savings via a water heating process, showerheads to conserve water and extensions to their fete stall area to increase income. After due evaluation, a heat pump solution to conserve electricity was decided upon, in tandem with the showerhead installations. Plans for the extended fete stall building operations are in progress.
The RW District Grand Master presented Mrs Chris Levings, the Honorary Treasurer and Secretary of GEM Homes, with a cheque for R800,000 at our District Grand Banquet.
Help For The Haven
W/Bro. Hans Van Gaalen identified the need for a small people transporter to ferry residents of the HAVEN in Pretoria, on short journeys to shops and doctors. A suitable 7 seater Toyota Versa was identified and purchased. It has all the bells and whistles plus a 5 year service contract and warranties. W/Bro. Tom Korff arranged (and donated) the branding of the vehicle.
