Sustainability
The UK precast concrete industry acknowledges that it has a responsibility to improve its performance on sustainability. The industry is becoming more resource efficient and environmentally aware through numerous initiatives led by British Precast.
British Precast members demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by signing the Sustainability Charter - a mandatory requirement for membership - which is fully and independently audited. The Precast Sustainability Charter and KPI initiative is part of a wider Concrete Sustainability Strategy initiative, led by the Sustainable Concrete Forum. British Precast has also developed a Precast Resource Efficiency Action Plan (REAP) in 2013 in collaboration with WRAP, MPA BRMCA and the Bricks Development Association (BDA) to improve different indicators and aspects linked to resource efficiency.

The UK precast concrete industry produces over 35m tonnes of products annually for the construction sector, worth an estimated £2bn, which is roughly equivalent to the turnover of the cement and ready-mixed concrete industries combined.
The aim of the Precast Sector Sustainability Charter is to encourage member companies of British Precast to go beyond legislation and take voluntary actions to make their products and operations more sustainable.
As a part of the UK concrete industry following the Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy, British Precast is proud to be committed to the strategy’s vision and objectives.
The Precast REAP was introduced in 2013 to help improve Resource Efficiency across the supply chain and support coordination with the downstream of the supply chain where precast concrete suppliers have no direct control over how their products are used.
We report annually on 16 key performance indicators associated with the sustainability of the precast concrete sector. Our reports cover between 60 to 75% of the UK's precast market. All 16 KPIs are reported against our targets to 2020.
