M.W. Leonard Hendee 1834
Leonard Hendee
Born in Coventry July 21, 1788, Leonard Hendee became an outstanding man in his neighborhood. As postmaster and as the leading merchant, dealing in everything from molasses to mules, he was depended upon for many town offices and responsibilities. The house in which he lived is still standing. Through the assistance of a descendant Mr. E. H. Cook, a fair likeness of him was obtained.
Raised in Warren Lodge No. 50, since defunct, on the third Wednesday of February, 1815, he was soon given office and became Master in April, 1820. This office he held for two years and then in 1848 was again given command for a year. He must have been well informed for his Lodge created the office of Lecturer for him in 1824.
Elected Grand Junior Warden in May, 1932, his promotion to the Grand East came May 14, 1834. At his own request he served but one year and the proceedings do not show anything of a marked nature in his administration. In 1825 and 1826 and 1831 to 1833 he was High Priest of Trinity Chapter No.9, R. A. M., and was Deputy Grand High Priest in 1834 and 1835. In Washington Commandery No.1, in which he was Knighted September 18, 1821, he served as Prelate in 1826 and as Generalissimo from 1827 to 1844.
His tombstone in the Andover Cemetery records his death as occurring September 2, 1859.
