M.W. Benoni A. Shepherd 1850
Benoni A. Shepherd
Except that he was born about 1795, lived at 11 Elm Street· in Hartford, was a grocer and died in Hartford, October 15, 1854, at the age of 59; nothing is known of the career of Benoni A. Shepard outside of Masonry.
He received his degrees in St. John's Lodge, No.4, February 13, February 27, and March 13 of 1822. Oil January 11, 1843, he was elected Master of his lodge and served two years. Starting in the Grand Lodge as Grand Marshal in May, 1842, he became Grand Master May 8, 1850. Of this body he was the head only one year, but of the Grand Chapter, R. A. M., he was Grand High Priest 1846 and 1847 and of the Grand Council R. & S. M., he was Grand Master 1845 and 1846. During his term as Grand Master the idea of erecting a monument to General David Wooster was proposed, but it was left for another to finish.
