M.W. William Elihu Sanford 1851-1852

William Elihu Sanford

Born in New Haven, November 19, 1814, to Hervey and Mary (Lyman) Sanford, our twentieth Grand Master was prepared for college at Hopkins Grammar School. His father having been a successful merchant, he abandoned the pursuit of academic learning and entered into mercantile life. His first venture was in New York, but shortly he returned to New Haven and was a very successful wholesale dry goods merchant. He retired from active business early, retaining the offices of president and director in many large corporations.

His activities in civic affairs were not marked. During the Civil War he served a short enlistment in the U. S. Navy and was stationed at Pensacola, Florida. From 1871 to his death May 25, 1895, he made New York City his residence but spent much time traveling abroad and in distant parts of America.

Initiated in Masonry in Hiram Lodge, No.1, July 27, 1837, he became Worshipful Master in 1843. Exalted in Franklin Chapter, No.2, R. A. M., in 1840, he was High Priest in 1847 and Grand High Priest in 1848 and 1849. Received and greeted in Harmony Council, No.8, R. & S. M., May 11, 1840, he was Thrice Illustrious Master in 1850 and 1851. Knighted in New Haven Commandery, No.2, K. T., May 14, 1840; he was Eminent Commander in 1851 and 1852, during a critical period when a strong man was needed. In 1855 and 1856 he held the position of Right Eminent Commander of the Grand Commandery, K. T. He had received the Scottish Rite degrees, including the 32nd degree.

Starting in the Grand Lodge as Grand Marshal in 1841, he served as Grand Master from May 14, 1851, to May 11, 1853. Due to illness he was not present at the Annual in 1853. At Brother Sanford's suggestion reports from Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master at the Annual Communication were made obligatory.
