George Frederick Daskam

Among the four Grand Masters, a likeness of whom we have thus far been unable to obtain, was George Frederick Daskam. He was born May 8, 1818. His vocation was that of wholesale grocer. His wife, Sarah Elizabeth Finch, and his daughter survived his death December 28, 1877, at Norwalk.

Beginning with his raising September 14, 1845, in St. John's Lodge, No.6, he ·was almost immediately appointed Senior Deacon and became Master in 1848. Exalted in Washington Chapter, No. 24~ R. A. M., December 12, 1845, he served as High Priest in 1853, 1854, 1855, and 1859. He progressed in the Council until he was M. P. Grand Master in 1858. Knighted in Clinton Commandery, No.3, K. T., ill 1847, he was Eminent Commander from 1854 through 1861 and Grand Commander of Connecticut, 1859. Starting in the Grand Lodge as Grand Junior Deacon in 1851 he was elected Grand Master May 12, 1858. This office he held but one year.

During the War Between the States Daskam served as a private in the Second Connecticut Light Battery from 1862 to 1865. In this connection he took part in the battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and the engagements at Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines in Alabama. Until his death he was interested in the G. A. R., and the Episcopal Church. "He ever held in high estimation our beloved Institution. He was social, large-hearted and of natural cheerfulness and gayety of temper."
