M.W. Amos Erastus Cobb 1869

Amos Erastus Cobb

Brother Cobb was born in Wrentham, Massachusetts, October 12, 1813, son of Amos and Lois Farrington Cobb. When three years of age, his family moved to Jewett City, Connecticut, where his father was superintendent of one of the leading textile mills. Later the family took up their residence at Norwich, Connecticut, his father assuming management of a large cotton mill which was located at the historic Norwich Falls.

After a liberal education in the local institutions of learning he became associated with his father in mill management, remaining in this capacity until joining forces with the Bacon Arms Company, firearm manufacturers of Norwich. He remained in this firm until his death, at which time he was sole owner. His death occurred August 13, 1890.

He was a staunch Methodist, being a life member of Sachem Street Church, and one of its most active and generous supporters.

His Masonic career begins with his initiation in Somerset Lodge, No. 34, June 27, 1860. On the fifteenth of the following August he was raised a Master Mason and immediately took an active interest in his lodge. In 1863 he was. Senior Warden and in 1864 Master. Exalted in Franklin Chapter, No.4, November 27, 1860, he applied to Franklin Council, No.3, which conferred on him the R. and S. M. degrees December 12 of the same year. Later he became a member of Columbian Commandery, No.4.

While in attendance at Grand Lodge in his capacity as Master of Somerset Lodge in 1864, he was elected Grand Senior Deacon. In 1865, although absent, he was elected Grand Senior Warden. He held the office of Deputy Grand Master for two years, 1867 and 1868, but when elected Grand Master in May, 1869, he definitely stated that he could serve but one year. This is referred to in his address which indicates great activity and frequent attendance at lodge meetings all over the state.

His service to Masonry was unstinted, his character without blemish and his home ties were his first thought.
