Asa Smith

Born in Norwalk, October 23, 1829, Asa Smith was educated in the public schools and Western Institute. In business he was employed in the manufacture of pottery but found time to hold several offices "in the borough of Norwalk. In 1869 he was sent as Representative to the General" Assembly, and in 1886 he is listed among the State Senators.

Receiving his degrees in St. John's Lodge, No. 6, February 3, February 17, and February 24 of 1853, he served as Master, 1857. Permitted to be a member of the Chapter and Commandery, he was High Priest of Washington Chapter, No. 24, 1858 to 1860 and Eminent Commander of Clinton Commandery, 1867-1873. In 1863 and 1864 he headed the Grand Chapter. Starting as Grand Junior Deacon in the Grand Lodge in 1865, he became Grand Master May 12, 1870. For one year he was at the head of the Craft of Connecticut.

His death occurred in New Haven September 29, 1907. It is said that he was "by nature of a genial and hospitable disposition with a frank and open-hearted bearing and that he lived among his brethren as Masons should live."
