Frank W. Havens

Born in Wethersfield, December 2, 1845, Frank W. Havens. resided in Hartford from the time he was two years old until his death with the exception of seven years spent in Manchester. Educated in the public schools of Hartford and with private tutors he later read law but because of ill health never applied for admission to the bar. Later he engaged in the insurance business and after conducting an agency, became connected in 1887 with the Hartford Life Insurance Company as Supervisor of Agencies. Afterwards he became Editor and Manager of their Literary Bureau, continuing as such until after his election as Grand Secretary.

During his brief residence in Manchester he entered Masonry. Raised in Manchester Lodge No. 73, May 10, 1881, he became Worshipful Master in 1883. In 1884 and 1886 also he held that office. Without holding office he was a member of Pythagoras Chapter No. 17, R. A. M., Wolcott Council No.1, R. & S. M., Washington Commandery No.1, K. T. He was also a member of all the Scottish Rite Bodies up to and including the Consistory, 32nd degree. The Order of the Eastern Star and the Shrine listed him among its members. During the years 1907 and 1908 he was President of the Board of Managers of The Masonic Charity Foundation.

In 1890 Brother Havens was District Deputy for Hartford County and was started in the chairs as Grand Junior Steward the next year. The year 1898 saw him Grand Master. At the death of Brother Barlow in 1909 Brother Havens became Grand Secretary which office he held until 1913 when he was made Grand Secretary Emeritus. His death occurred October 21st of that same year. The Masonic interment ceremonies were in charge of Grand Master Wilbur S. Comstock.

As Grand Secretary he was well known to the Masons of this jurisdiction as a faithful and efficient servant of Masonry as he had been in all his life to every trust.
