M.W. Benjamin Franklin Turner 1906
Benjamin Franklin Turner
Born in Middletown, March 17, 1860, Benjamin F. Turner was educated in his native town and in Durham. In his youth he entered business life in his home city, afterwards becoming the proprietor of a large grocery and provision house which he successfully conducted up to the time of his death.
Raised in St. John's Lodge No.2, February 4, 1887, he became Worshipful Master in 1892. Exalted in Washington Chapter No.6, R. A. M., March 20, 1889, he became High Priest in 1897. Columbia Council No.9, R. & S. M. conferred on him its degrees and he was knighted in Cyrene Commandery No.8, K.T., November 25, 1889. Brother Turner held membership also in all the Scottish Rite Bodies up to and including the Consistory. In 1913 he was Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Serving faithfully as District Deputy from 1893 to 1898 he became Grand Junior Steward in 1899. From there he progressed until he was elected Grand Master in 1906.
In civil life his unobtrusive nature precluded him from seeking office although he was never a man to shirk duty. His School District called upon him to serve as Clerk and Treasurer for many years and in 1908 he creditably represented his district in the State Senate.
Among his fellow' townsmen he was noted for his sturdy honesty and square dealing. Quiet but conscientious and efficient service was characteristic of him. His death occurred April 17, 1913 and the interment services were in charge of Most Worshipful Wilbur S. Comstock.
A picture of Most Worshipful Brother Turner appears in the Proceedings of 1914.
