Wilbur S. Comstock was born in East Haddam, August 16, 1849, and was educated in the public schools of that town and in Wilbraham Academy, Mass.
After some years spent in other activities, he, in 1889, engaged in a general insurance business in East Haddam, which he successfully conducted up to the time of his death. He was Secretary of the South Middlesex Insurance Board and Director of the National Bank of New England. Although by no means an "offensive partisan", he was sturdily Republican in Politics, and as such represented his town in the State Legislature of 1905 and 1906.
He was raised in Columbia Lodge No. 26, East Haddam, July 8, 1874, serving as its Worshipful Master in 1882 and 1883, afterwards serving as its Secretary continuously from 1891 to 1913. He always felt a lively interest in the welfare of his Lodge and was prominent in securing for it a building practically its own. In numerous other ways, he did much to improve its efficiency and standing.
In other branches of Masonry he was a member of Burning Bush Chapter No. 29, R. A. M., Columbia Council No.9, R. & S. M., Cyrene Commandery No.8, K. T., and of all the Scottish Rite bodies up to and including the 32nd degree. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Mystic Shrine.
In the Grand Lodge, he was a District Deputy, 1902 to 1905.
In 1906, he was appointed Grand Junior Steward, being advanced in regular graduation until 1913, when he was elected Grand Master. On the completion of his term, he was appointed for a period of five years as one of the Grand Custodians of the Work.
He died September 10, 1912, and his remains were consigned !o Mother Earth by his Lodge on Sunday, September 13, 1914, in the presence of Most Worshipful Edgar H. Parkman, Grand Master, with a number of his Associate Grand Officers and Past Grand Masters, together with a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.
In the Proceedings of 1915 appears a picture of Brother Comstock.
