Arthur Franklin Lewis

Because of his education, his profession and his broad sympathy for human frailties "Art" Lewis was' eminently fitted for winning the enduring friendship of great' numbers with whom he came in contact, both within and without the Fraternity, and his place cannot be filled., .

Born in Nichols, Connecticut, February'29, 1872, he was-educated at Yale and the General Theological Seminary in New York City. After holding pastorates in Montana and New Jersey he returned to Connecticut and filled positions in Unionville, North Haven and Naugatuck.

Raised in Pioneer Lodge No. 70 of Hackensack, New Jersey, June 6, 1902, he, transferred his membership as he transferred his church sphere. In Unionville he was Worshipful Master of Evening Star Lodge No. 101 in 1906. In North Haven he was Secretary of Corinthian Lodge No. 103 for ten years. . .

After serving as District Deputy of the Fifth District in 1907, as Associate Grand Chaplain for fifteen years and Grand Chaplain for three years, he was appointed Grand Junior Steward in February, 1929, reaching the Grand East in 1936. Membership was his in all the York and Scottish Rite Bodies. The Grand Chapter elected him Grand High Priest in 1930. He was elected Venerable Master of the Veteran Association in 1940.

His interest in the Masonic Home was outstanding and he spent many unofficial hours there adjusting difficulties and promoting harmony. In January, 1907, he 'was elected Vice-President of the Board of Managers and continued in that office until his death. On more than one occasion he was acting Superintendent for a short period.

Art was a man among men and thoroughly enjoyed social intercourse with his brethren. His advice and consolation were sought for and appreciated by many without his church as well as within. He was actively in charge of his last church, St. Michael's in Naugatuck, until he was retired about two weeks before his death, April 23, 1945.
