Herbert Linus Emanuelson. Jr.

 Most Worshipful Brother Herbert Linus Emanuelson, Jr., was born in 'New Haven, Connecticut, on September 14, 1929, the son of Herbert Linus and Helen Hitchner Emanuelson. He received his education in the public School system in Orange, Connecticut, and graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven. He graduated from Yale University, and the University of Connecticut School of Law. In 1954 he was admitted to the Connecticut Bar, and commenced practice with his father in the Summer of that year.


 In July of 1953, he.married Barbara Ann Cox of Schenectady, New York, and their union has been blessed with two children - a daughter, Lynne; and a son, Herbert, IV.


 Following his marriage, Herb as he is affectionately known to all, moved to Hamden and immediately became active in Community affairs. He was elected a member of Hamden Representative Town Meeting and served as its moderator until the establishment of a Legislative Council. During the interim of his serving as President of the Legislative Council, rules were written and adopted for the Council. At that time the Governor appointed him a member of the Connecticut Elections Commission. Brother Herb served as a member of the Army Reserve from 1951 through 1959.


 As an Attorney, Brother Emanuelson has served as President of the New Haven County Bar Association, as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Recommendations for Admission to the Connecticut Bar for New Haven County, and has recently been appointed by the Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court as one of the first Attorney Trial Referees to hear civil non-jury cases. Such a program is a first in this Country; being established to hopefully reduce the overburdened trial Calendar, through such services of Attorneys, acting as Referees while they still actively practice law.


 Brother Herb is a member of Bethesda Evangelical Church in New Haven, and has served as Vice-President of the Church Council and a member of the Council.
 He holds membership in various Clubs and Associations: member of the Board and Past President of the National Club Association; Vice President of Mory's Association; Past President of the Quinnipiack Club, and a member of the Board of Directors of the New Haven Country Club. Brother Herb is an avid golfer, and served as President of the Yale Golf Association from 1960 to 1962, and upon leaving office, was honored by having the fifth hole named in his honor. During his golfing career at Yale, he scored two holes-in-one on this hole. He is also a past President of the Connecticut State Golf Association.


 Brother Emanuelson has been actively involved since 1969 as general Counsel for the Masonic Charity Foundation, which operates the Masonic Home and Hospital in Wallingford, and Ashlar of Newtown, A Masonic Home. He was appointed in 1985 as a member of the Board of Managers of the Masonic Charity Foundation, and presently serves on that Board.


 Most Worshipful Brother Emanuelson's Masonic biography attests to his interest in, and his fidelity to the Fraternity. He was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, in Wooster Lodge No. 79, A.F. & A.M. in New Haven on April 25, 1951 and served his Lodge as Worshipful Master in 1962, and as a member of the Board of Trustees from that date.


 His service to this Grand Lodge commenced with his appointment to the Trial Commission in 1970 and his dedicated services have been expended on several Grand Lodge Committees since: Presently the Judge Advocate; Chairman of Jurisprudence Rules and Regulations; Budget; Medals and Awards; Retention; Publication and Drug and Alcohol Abuse among Youth. He was awarded the Pierpont Edwards Medal in Bronze for Distinguished Masonic Service in 1975.
 At the Conference of Grand Masters of Masons in North America, held in Arlington, Virginia in 1986, Most Worshipful Brother Emanuelson was appointed Chairman of the "National Masonic Foundation for the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Among Children." He is presently Chairing this Foundation, which he assisted in forming as a Corporation exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.


 In 1977 Brother Emanuelson was appointed Right Worshipful District Deputy for Masonic District 4-A, and in 1978 entered the Grand Lodge "Line" when he was appointed Grand Junior Steward by Most Worshipful Brother James M. Desmond, upon the recommendation of Past Grand Master Arthur F. Simpson, Jr. He progressed steadily through the Chairs and was elected and installed as the 138th Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Connecticut March 29, 1984.
 His York Rite membership includes Franklin Chapter No. 2, R.A.M.; Harmony Council No. 8, R. & S.M. and New Haven Commandery No. 1, all of New Haven.
 In Scottish Rite Masonry he is a member of E.G. Storer Lodge of Perfection; Elm City Council, Princes of Jerusalem and New Haven Chapter Rose Croix. He is a member of Lafayette Consistory, Bridgeport; St. Andrew's Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine; Pyramid Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., and the New Haven Shrine Club.
 Honorary membership has been bestowed upon him by Hiram Lodge No. 1; Compass Lodge No. 9 and Ansantawae Lodge No. 89. He belongs to the Masonic Veterans Association of Connecticut and is Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. In 1985 Brother Emanuelson was Coroneted as an honorary Inspector General 33̊ of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite.


 For outstanding service to God, his Family and his Brothers, and for his steadfast dedication to those tenets which all good Masons revere, and his constancy and willingness to give freely of his time and talents in the interest of his fellowman and in service to Freemasonry the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Connecticut is honored and proud to award Most Worshipful Brother Herbert Linus Emanuelson, Jr. THE PIERPONT EDWARDS MEDAL IN SILVER FOR EMINENT MASONIC SERVICE.
Brother Emanuelson passed on the Celestial Lodge January 8, 2003.
